Calvin Keith letter : Warren, [Mass.], to George Merriam, Springfield, Mass., 1849 Aug. 2.

A man [possibly an acquaintance] writing publisher George Merriam that he has been offered an expenses free trip aboard the ship Lucy bound for San Francisco, California around Cape Horn and will be leaving on August 15th with stops in Rio de Janero and Valaparaiso. He writes hoping the publisher "might make up a package or two of books that were unsaleable here but which would do for the Miners to pour [sic] over." Other details include the number of passengers the Lucy can hold (25) and the price charged for freight. He ends with news of personal details from "Bro. David."
